Jeff Rudolph arrived at the second alarm fire in Waukegan yesterday and captured several photos to document the incident. The fire occurred on November 5th, 2010, at approximately 2:00 PM. It was located at 5666 W. Victor Lane, in the far southwest part of the district. This area is not equipped with fire hydrants, which made water supply a critical challenge for the responding crews.
The fire was in an attached garage of a single-story frame structure. To manage the situation, Knollwood Engine 44 was used to draft water from the tenders that had arrived on scene. The response included multiple mutual aid units, highlighting the importance of cooperation between neighboring fire departments.
One of the engines seen at the scene was Waukegan’s E-2 (1612), a 1991 E-One Cyclone 1500/750. Jeff captured a close-up shot showing the engine pre-connected to the fire, ready for immediate action. Another notable unit was a Grayslake Fire Department Mack/Darley/Stuart 1000/4000 tender, which responded as part of the mutual aid effort. This particular truck was one of several that came into Waukegan to assist with the second alarm.
Perhaps the most distant responder was the Pleasant Prairie Fire Department from Wisconsin. Their Pierce Arrow tanker, Tender 5613, traveled the farthest to support the operation. Built on an Arrow chassis, this unit played a vital role in supplying water to the scene. Jeff took a detailed photo of the truck, capturing its appearance and the effort it took to reach the location.
These images not only provide a visual record of the event but also highlight the dedication and teamwork of the firefighters involved. Each department brought their resources to the table, ensuring that the fire was effectively controlled despite the challenges posed by the remote location and lack of hydrants.
