When we published our recent post about the Winfield Fire District, Stephen Wilcox shared some compelling photos and reflections from a unique rescue that took place last summer. His story really stood out and reminded us of the importance of quick thinking and skilled response in emergency situations.
One particular moment caught my attention—the **Winfield Dive/Rescue vehicle**. I dug through my old files and found a call they responded to back in late summer 2010. The West Branch of the DuPage River flows just a block or two from their station, and this incident happened nearby. Two people were exploring the area when they didn’t notice the rising water levels. A quick phone call brought help to the scene.
The divers went upstream and made their way to the island where the couple was stranded. It wasn’t an easy task, but with careful planning and teamwork, both individuals were safely brought to shore. It’s a great example of how prepared emergency responders can be, even in unexpected situations.
Here are some photos from the event, taken by Stephen Wilcox:

It's always inspiring to see how local fire departments handle these kinds of emergencies with professionalism and care. Thanks to Stephen for sharing this story and these images.
