This is from Eric Haak:
They got this one out pretty fast, and with the temperatures being so low, I didn’t stick around for too many more photos.
Shortly before 2:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, Chicago’s 17th Battalion Chief was called to a fire report on the 5700 block of South Indiana. As they were en route, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received calls about people trapped on the second floor, which escalated the response to a Still and Box. The first due engine was just five blocks away, and Engine 84 arrived on scene in under two minutes, reporting a fire on the second floor of a 3-story, 30x70 ordinary apartment building. If you weren’t within a few miles, there wasn’t much to see—fire was confined to one unit of the six-unit structure.
I arrived as Truck 51 was raising their main to the roof, and within minutes, the fire was out. All interior searches came back negative. Seven adults and six children were displaced, but a family cat miraculously survived. As I was leaving, the soot-covered and water-drenched pet was returned to its grateful owner. It looked dead at first, but then it started moving and seemed okay. The still companies involved were Engine 84, Engine 47, Truck 51, and Truck 30. I believe the box engines were 50 and 16. I’ve included a photo of Engine 50, which is the oldest active engine in the fleet.
