Wet-Down for new squad in Deerfield

On Monday, January 11, 2016, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District (FPD) held a wet-down ceremony to officially put their new Squad 19 into service. Despite the freezing temperatures that made it difficult to use water outdoors, firefighters and officers brought the new engine into the station and used a hardline inside the building to complete the event. The cold weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance, who gathered to celebrate the arrival of the new unit. The event was captured by photographer Larry Shapiro, who documented the moment the fire engine was pushed into the station. Several images from the day show the dedication and pride of the firefighters as they prepared for the official launch. One photo highlights the new Pierce Dash CF PUC, a state-of-the-art fire truck that will serve the community for years to come. In a heartfelt gesture, the squad was dedicated to the memory of Deerfield-Bannockburn Firefighter/Paramedic Brad Hytoff. His family was present at the ceremony, and his parents placed a plaque on the driver’s door as a tribute. The dedication served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice made by those who serve in the line of duty. In addition to the plaque, the Hytoff family also participated in the traditional wet-down, using the hose to symbolically bless the new engine. These moments were deeply emotional for everyone involved, highlighting the strong bonds within the fire department and the community.
