Winfield dive rescue (2010)

When we shared the story about the Winfield Fire District recently, Stephen Wilcox sent in some compelling photos and a detailed account of a unique rescue operation that took place last summer. His message really caught my attention. One particular part stood out to me — the **Winfield Dive/Rescue vehicle**. I dug back into my archives from 2010, late summer, when the department responded to an unusual call involving two people who had gotten themselves into a tricky situation. The West Branch of the DuPage River runs just a block or two from their station. A short hike up the trail led them to the scene where the couple was stranded on an island. The water level had risen quickly, and they were caught off guard. Fortunately, one of them managed to make a cell phone call for help. The Winfield firefighters arrived promptly, and the dive team got into action. They entered the river upstream, navigated through the current, and reached the island where the couple was waiting. Thanks to the quick response and skilled efforts of the rescuers, both individuals were safely brought to shore. It was a great example of how prepared and effective local emergency services can be in unexpected situations. Here are some photos from that day, captured by Stephen Wilcox:
