Chinese truck quality is expected to catch up with Japan and South Korea in the short term

The automotive industry's focus on exports is growing from the initial enthusiasm to the rapid increase in volume, to the thinking of far-reaching strategic issues such as improving quality, strengthening after-sales service capabilities, and brand building. So, how far is the gap between China's autos and foreign autos?

"Can catch up with Japan and South Korea within three to five years."

Zhang Xiaojun, vice president of the China Federation of Machinery Industry and president of the China Association of Automotive Engineers, asserted at a commercial vehicle export forum recently held that “in the next three to five years, the quality of commercial vehicles in China will catch up with the level of Japan and South Korea.” Commitment to ensure that 800,000 km without major repairs, and the new car of China's commercial vehicle companies generally only guarantee 300,000 km without major repairs. However, he believes that after three to five years of hard work, the quality level of commercial vehicles in China will catch up with Japan and South Korea.

From a digital point of view, it may seem difficult to increase the product use period from the current 300,000 km to more than 800,000 km within three to five years. However, the attitudes of sales and technical leaders of several major domestic truck companies in their interview with this reporter are very consistent: “We have no problem with this crossover.”

Truck business confidence

Zhang Bing, deputy general manager of China FAW Trade Corporation, believes that the domestic technology gap between commercial vehicles and foreign countries is mainly in the engine and other key components and electronic control technology. The technical gap has caused our products to be inferior to foreign products in terms of reliability, safety, and emission levels. However, these core technologies or high-precision technology products also have manufacturers in the country.

According to Zhang Bing, at present, the domestic mainstream engine companies are developing the National IV engine. Many domestic automotive R&D work is conducted in accordance with international standards, and development tools and development processes are synchronized with the international advanced level. For example, at the beginning of design, Liberation J6 positioned its development standards at the international advanced level. Although due to fierce competition in the price of commercial vehicles in our country, to a certain extent, it has limited the promotion of some new technologies. However, within three to five years, although China’s heavy trucks still have gaps in some high-precision technologies compared with foreign products, they are reliable. Sex and other aspects will surely catch up with the level of Japan and South Korea."

Yan Jiazhi, general manager of China National Heavy Duty Truck Sales Co., also believes it is not difficult to catch up with Japan and South Korea. He divided international trucks into two systems: Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. The characteristics of European and American trucks are that they can run faster, with higher technical content, higher quality, and higher prices. Japanese and Korean trucks are more inclined to be light and flexible and are good at cost control. At present, the gap between China's trucks and foreign products is mainly in environmental protection, electronic technology and other aspects, and there is also a gap in the manufacturing process. For example, in the coating process, the paint color of Europe and the United States can be guaranteed to be basically unchanged for 5 to 10 years, and the paint color of our car can only be maintained for two to three years.

He also pointed out that in terms of key technologies, domestic truck companies are stepping up research. For example, China National Heavy Duty Truck was selected as the "Heavy Vehicle Integrated Development Technology" of the National 863 Project. It will establish a complete heavy-duty vehicle development flow and design specifications, and form an integrated platform for the digitalized design and development of heavy-duty vehicles with independent intellectual property rights.

The deficiencies in China's auto manufacturing process are mostly caused by the low manufacturing levels of rubber, steel, glass, and other related industries. With the improvement of the overall level of China's manufacturing industry, the automobile manufacturing process will also be improved.

Truck company accelerates pace

Zhao Shuying, director of the Foton Motor Light Truck Research Institute, believes that in the past, companies in China have not studied deeply in terms of product reliability, durability, and other technologies. However, in recent years, domestic companies have begun to pay attention to research and development and have invested heavily in research and development. Establish labs, purchase test equipment, and equip researchers with advanced development software. Now companies have basically established specialized research and development centers, and some have also engaged in joint development with foreign countries. In the past due to the lack of development tools and test equipment, the durability research was mainly focused on the engine and other key components. The role of the door hinges, rubber pads and other small components was generally ignored. Now that the company has developed tools and test equipment, the durability research has also deepened and expanded. "Accordingly, judging from the current development trend, the domestic trucks' level of judgement that catch up with Japan and South Korea within a few years is more objective."

The person in charge of the light truck design department of JAC believes that the gap in the quality of products between China and Japan is largely due to low prices. “The low price determines that you are unlikely to use good materials and components. If our product prices can now be increased to 50% or 80% of the Japanese and Korean product prices, instead of 100%, our product quality will be big. In the same way, reliability is not lost to Japanese and Korean products."

In order to meet the noise requirements of overseas markets, Jianghuai began light-vessel noise reduction research in 2005. At the end of April this year, JAC announced that it had achieved a technological breakthrough in noise reduction of light trucks. The noise value outside the car is obviously better than the national environmental protection requirements, and the car noise value has reached the international level. Noise reduction also reduces fuel consumption.
