Silicon thin-film solar cell conversion rate of 13.6% to break the world record

A research group composed of several research institutes in Japan recently claimed that they have developed a stable triple-junction thin-film silicon solar cell with a conversion efficiency of 13.6%, successfully breaking the previously reported world record of 13.44%. The research team consists of personnel drawn from several of Japan's largest research centers, including the AIST, PVT, Sharp, Panasonic and Mitsubishi.

Aist researcher Sakai Tamura said that the new study has achieved two important results. One is the development of thin-film silicon solar cells with advanced light capture capabilities and the second is the photocurrent density of 34.1 mA per square centimeter at the microcrystalline absorber layer only 4 microns thick.

There are many different types of solar cell efficiency, and it is often difficult to directly compare the efficiency of different types of solar cells. This study used a stable photoelectric conversion efficiency (pce).

Sakai Tamura pointed out that as long as the solar cells exposed to light, humidity, temperature and other conditions, the conversion efficiency will be a certain degree of attenuation, so most of the solar cells are through the "initial" efficiency to be evaluated. If the battery is like crystalline silicon material, the performance is relatively stable; and if it involves amorphous silicon, amorphous silicon, the situation will be completely different after exposure to electrical conductivity will significantly decline, this feature is called swe effect.

A number of factors can lead to light-induced degradation of silicon solar cells. One countermeasure is to use a honeycomb structure on the substrate. Prior honeycomb texture mostly used for single-junction solar cells, which only made of a semiconductor material, only absorb one wavelength of light. In the new study, scientists found that this structure can also be used for multi-junction solar cells, such batteries can absorb light of multiple wavelengths, single-junction cells have more excellent trapping performance. To further improve their efficiency, they also finely control the texture of honeycomb and add an anti-reflection film with moth-eye structure.

To make a fair comparison, the researchers tested solar cells exposed to the sun for a period of time. The results show that the initial efficiency of this battery up to 14.5%, the steady efficiency of 13.6%.

Despite a new record, researchers think there is still room for improvement. The stability efficiency is expected to exceed 14% after improving the performance of the top layer of the solar cell and solving the problem of spectral mismatch.
