Chicago 2-11 Alarm 10-29-12
From the Chicago Tribune: Chicago Fire Department crews are still on the scene as an extra-alarm fire broke out early this morning in a vacant building on the 8800 block of South Escanaba Avenue. The blaze quickly spread to three other structures, forcing 20 residents—including six children—out of their homes. The fire was first reported around 4:20 a.m., and firefighters found a two-story frame building fully engulfed in flames. As the fire spread to two occupied buildings and one vacant structure, an extra-alarm was called, bringing over 100 firefighters and paramedics to the area. By 6 a.m., the fire was under control. One firefighter suffered a knee injury while battling the flames and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital. A local resident also required medical attention after experiencing an asthma attack caused by smoke inhalation, according to officials. Residents in the area were evacuated for safety, and emergency crews are working to assess the damage and determine what caused the fire. Authorities have not yet released a cause, but investigations are ongoing. The incident has left many in the neighborhood shaken, especially those who lost their homes or had to leave in a hurry. Local community groups are already stepping in to offer support and assistance to those affected. For more updates, follow @peternickeas on Twitter.
