Chicago working fire, 7-20-14

"This is a report from Eric Haak, who captured some intense moments during a fire on 117th Street and Michigan Avenue in Chicago last Sunday afternoon. When Engine 75 arrived, the fire was already bursting out of a sector B window, despite their station being just two blocks away. The firefighters managed to quickly contain the blaze on the first floor, but it had spread into a confined attic space, making the job more challenging. All the photos showing firefighters working inside without masks or air packs were taken during the overhaul phase, long after the fire had been declared extinguished. Here's a glimpse of what happened that day: ![House on fire with smoke billowing through the roof](#) ![Firefighters using axes to ventilate a peaked-roof house](#) ![More firefighters working to ventilate the structure](#) ![A firefighter taking a breather after battling the flames](#) ![Firefighters conducting overhaul operations post-fire](#) ![Team members resting after completing their tasks](#) ![Another view of firefighters finishing up the overhaul](#) ![Chicago’s Spartan fire engine at the scene](#) Each image tells its own story about the dedication and hard work of these firefighters. It’s a reminder of how dangerous and unpredictable fires can be, and the bravery it takes to face such situations head-on."
