On March 10th, just before noon, the Evanston Fire Department received a report of smoke emanating from a residential house located at 1516 Brummel Street. Upon their arrival, firefighters noticed thick black smoke billowing from the basement of the single-family home. Initial assessments revealed severe fire conditions on the lower level, prompting an urgent upgrade to a Box Alarm. Additional resources, including neighboring fire departments, were called in to help control the blaze, which required the deployment of three hose lines.
The property owners had returned home to discover smoke coming from their residence. Before the firefighters arrived, one of the elderly owners—an 87-year-old man—ventured inside to investigate the source of the smoke. By the time the firefighters reached the scene, they located and rescued him near the bottom of the basement stairs. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
Evanston Fire Department Chaplain Monte Dillard and the American Red Cross extended condolences and support to the family. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fortunately, smoke detectors were functioning correctly at the time of the incident. As advised by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), smoke detectors should be tested monthly and batteries replaced annually unless specified otherwise. In case of activation, it is crucial for residents to evacuate and contact emergency services.
