This morning at approximately 8:40 AM, a significant fire broke out at 6730 South Shore Drive, prompting an extensive response from emergency services. According to the Chicago Tribune, the fire escalated rapidly, leading to the activation of a 3-11 alarm system, which required the deployment of numerous resources, including at least 10 ambulances.
Tragically, two men lost their lives in the incident, both suffering full cardiac arrests due to smoke inhalation. A third victim, a woman, was found in critical condition in the building's lobby but was successfully revived by paramedics before being transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The men were located on the seventh floor, and despite efforts to save them, they could not be revived.
Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford reported that the initial fire likely originated in an apartment bedroom on the seventh floor, spreading to an adjacent unit on the eighth floor. By 9:25 AM, firefighters had managed to bring the blaze under control. In a rare move, rather than ordering an evacuation, the fire department instructed residents to remain inside their apartments, citing safety concerns. Firefighters conducted thorough door-to-door checks to ensure everyone was accounted for.
The extreme cold temperatures resulted in water from hoses and hydrants freezing almost instantly, creating large patches of ice around the building. Emergency vehicles, including dozens of fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars, lined South Shore Drive, causing significant traffic disruptions. A firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation.
According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, one of the deceased men was in his 30s, while the other was in his 40s. Both were pronounced dead at different hospitals. Further details about the victims and the ongoing investigation are still emerging.
