This just came in from John Tulipano:

From what I’ve gathered so far, firefighters from Addison and Lombard responded to an emergency situation this morning (March 28, 2017) involving a man who got electrocuted while trimming trees near Villa Avenue and Myrick Avenue. He ended up getting trapped in a tree, and it took quite some effort for the firefighters to get him down.
Here’s what happened, according to reports:
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when two men were cutting branches in a backyard. Tragically, one of them, Jose Fulgencio-Hueramo, a 51-year-old man from Melrose Park, lost his life after coming into contact with live power lines. The other individual involved sustained critical injuries but survived.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the workers fell from the ladder near the tree and landed on the ground. The second worker remained stuck in the tree. After ComEd managed to shut off the power supply to the lines, firefighters from both Addison and Lombard were able to climb up and rescue the trapped man. One of the victims was then airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Addison Fire Chief Joe Leone stated, “Once the electricity was cut off, our firefighters were able to safely bring the person down from the tree.†It's still unclear how exactly the men got tangled in the power lines, and authorities are investigating further.
I was on the scene and managed to capture some photos that really tell the story. You can see the firefighters working hard to remove the injured person using specialized equipment, as well as the Superior Air Med helicopter arriving to transport the severely injured individual. There was definitely a lot of coordination between different emergency services to handle this tragic event.
Here’s a quick summary of the images:
- Firefighters removing a stokes basket from a fire truck.
- Firefighters operating from a tower ladder platform.
- A firefighter cutting vegetation along a wooden fence.
- The Superior Air Med helicopter arriving on the scene.
It was a tough day for everyone involved, and my thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased. This is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who work close to electrical hazards.
