Rolling Meadows firefighters were called to 5201 Carriageway Drive on Wednesday evening around 8 PM (March 4, 2015) for a reported fire in a third-floor apartment. As they approached the scene, they were informed that a sofa was already on fire, with flames spreading up the wall. Battalion 15 quickly escalated the alarm to a Code 4 due to the intensity of the fire. Police on the scene later reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window and a resident jumping from the balcony. The incident was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.
According to reports, police officers were already performing CPR on the injured individual when firefighters arrived. The Chicago Tribune noted that the apartment was evacuated, and officials confirmed one fatality as a result of the fire. The victim, whose age and gender were not immediately released, had jumped from the third-floor balcony of the building, according to Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. The individual was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
By approximately 10 PM, the fire was contained, but crews remained on-site working to fully extinguish the blaze. The first and second floors of the building were evacuated, and firefighters were conducting a final sweep of the third floor. The alarm was later upgraded to a second alarm, then a third, before being officially canceled just before midnight.
Multiple emergency units responded to the scene, and several photos and videos will be shared in upcoming posts. It's worth noting that this building is located directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that was involved in a three-alarm fire several years ago.
