Firefighter Combat Challenge in Tinley Park

The Firefighter Combat Challenge is taking place this weekend in Tinley Park at the Tinley Park Convention Center, located at 18451 Convention Center Drive, Tinley Park, IL 60477. This event brings together firefighters from across the U.S. and Canada, with participation expanding globally to countries like New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. The challenge not only promotes firefighter fitness but also showcases the physical and mental demands of the profession to the public. Karl Klotz was on site Saturday and captured several compelling images from the event. Among the highlights were the youth and adult combat challenges, as well as an impressive display of emergency response vehicles and equipment. **Youth Combat Challenge:** The event featured a special competition for kids, where young participants tackled various tasks that simulate real firefighter duties. One competitor worked on a miniature Keiser Force Machine, demonstrating strength and endurance. Another part of the challenge involved dragging a dummy across the finish line, simulating a rescue operation. Firefighters also practiced using a hand line, which is a crucial skill in firefighting scenarios. **Adult Combat Challenge:** The adult version of the challenge was intense and physically demanding. Competitors began by preparing for the race, then climbed a tower carrying a hose load. At the top, they had to haul more hose, testing their strength and stamina. Others used mallets to move the Keiser Force Machine, while some dragged a charged 1 3/4" hose line back toward the start and aimed it at a target. The final stage involved rescuing a dummy, highlighting the critical nature of quick and efficient emergency responses. **Apparatus on Display:** In addition to the competitive events, several fire apparatus were on display. The Rescue Remembrance Project showcased a restored FDNY Rescue 4, a symbol of bravery and sacrifice. MABAS Division 24's Fire Investigation Unit and Haz Mat response units, including box truck #9901 and the X-Tinley Park Spartan/Darley engine, were also present. Oak Forest 951, the Division 24 Mobile Communications Van, and the Cook County Emergency Operations Mobile Command Center were among the other notable units on display. A DECON unit was set up for decontamination training, further emphasizing the comprehensive nature of modern firefighting operations.
