Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share some quick updates and observations from my time at O’Hare (ORD) for the annual ARFF and Haz-Mat training sessions. While there, I managed to snap some photos of the rigs in between our training drills.
One of the rigs that really caught my attention was 5-3-1. It’s an impressive vehicle that carries a Zumro tent, some HVAC equipment for the Zumro system, and also has some decontamination gear onboard. This one is based out of ORD Rescue Station 1. Another rig worth noting is 8-8-1A, which is currently stationed at the AMC building at ORD.
I also saw 6-5-7S (Spare), Engine 9, and the brand-new 2-7-8 all gathered at the training facility. They were practicing setting up the Zumro tent, which seemed like a pretty important exercise. There’s also 6-5-T, which serves as the training rig for the pit. It’s a vintage 1988 Oshkosh T-3000 crash rig, so it’s got quite a bit of history behind it.
Back at ORD, 2-9-8 is the current training officer, and 2-9-12 is handling the coordination for the live fire simulators. It’s always fascinating to see how these teams work together during such intensive training exercises.
In addition to the ORD rigs, I managed to capture some shots of Lockport Rescue 6 preparing to tackle a fire simulation in the Pit. They looked incredibly focused and professional. Over at Orland Engine 8 (Reserve), they were busy pumping handlines for both the Pit and the Wheel/Brake/Interior simulator. It was great to see everyone working seamlessly together.
Here are some of the photos I took:

It’s always an eye-opening experience to witness how well-prepared these departments are for any situation. Training like this is crucial, and seeing it firsthand really drives home the importance of teamwork and preparedness.
Take care,
Mike Lopina
