Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-21-13

I just got back from checking out the fire scene on my way home. It happened at the Still and Box location on 2324 South California Avenue. From what I could tell, it was an old two-and-a-half story wooden building that had been left vacant. By the time I arrived, the firefighters had already shifted their strategy to a more defensive approach. Tower 5 had been reassigned to Sector 1, while Squad 1's Snorkel unit was busy working with a powerful water cannon in Sector 2. The fire seemed to be concentrated in the attic or on the second floor. Although I didn't see any visible flames, there was a thick cloud of smoke billowing out. It was chaotic but controlled, with everyone focused on containing the situation. I snapped a few pictures while I was there, so you can get a better idea of how things looked. The smoke made it hard to pinpoint exactly where the fire was raging, but it was clear they had their hands full. Here are some shots I took as I stood nearby. The photos don’t fully capture the scale of the operation, but they give you an idea of how intense it was. It’s always tough to see buildings like this go up in smoke, especially when they’ve been empty for so long. Hopefully, the firefighters will have it under control soon. [Attached are several photos taken by me, showing different angles of the scene. You can see the smoke rising high above the rooftops, and the firefighters in action below.] This is definitely one of those situations where you appreciate the work these crews do every day. Let’s hope no one got hurt out there today. -Drew
