ABB supplies power and propulsion systems for two offshore vessels

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has received more than $20 million in contracts to supply power and propulsion systems for two next-generation offshore vessels.
The first ship, designed for the ULSTEIN SX165, is being built by the Norwegian Ulstein Verft shipyard for Island Ventures 11, a joint venture between the US shipowner Edison Chouest Offshore and the Norwegian shipowner Island Offshore in 2012. The ship is 145.7 meters long and 28 meters wide. It can provide accommodation for 200 people. It will be the largest ship built by Ulstein Verft and is expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2015. The ship is equipped with 2 cranes with lifting capacity of 400 tons and 140 tons respectively; there are also 3 separate main rooms on board to ensure the extreme reliability of operation. ABB will supply an advanced complete power and diesel-fired system package, including medium voltage generator sets, switchboards, transformers, frequency converters, and motors, with good reliability and fuel propulsion efficiency.
The second vessel, built by Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries for Island Offshore, is designed with the revolutionary Rolls-Royce UT 777 to optimize subsea performance, including top hole drilling, light wellhead intervention, subsea engineering and inspection maintenance. ABB will supply an advanced complete power and diesel-fired system package, including medium voltage generator sets, switchboards and power management systems, transformers, frequency converters and motors, as well as a complete fire and gas monitoring and control system. The power distribution and propulsion system will also be monitored by ABB's remote diagnostic system to help reduce installation and repair time and improve operational safety. The ship is expected to be delivered in 2017.
