Larry Shapiro sent over this report:
Late Monday afternoon, the Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to a call regarding a fire at Midwest Motors, located at 540 Cortland Drive. Initial reports noted light smoke emanating from the roof's eaves. However, as the situation worsened, the emergency response level was escalated to a Box Alarm. The commercial building housed an expansive showroom featuring high-end and exotic pre-owned vehicles.
The fire originated on the second floor and spread into the attic area at the southern end of the sprinkler-equipped structure. Firefighting teams managed to contain the flames to that specific section of the building, though significant water damage occurred throughout the facility. While some cars sustained damage, many were successfully moved out of harm's way.
Responding agencies included Lake Zurich (with four engines), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside for engines; Wauconda and Arlington Heights provided trucks, while Long Grove and Deerfield sent squads. Ambulance support came from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville, with chief officers dispatched from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove.
Attached are several photos capturing the scene. The first image shows the D side of the fire-affected building. Another photo features the setup by Arlington Heights' Tower 1. There's also an image of Wauconda firefighters using a master stream from their tower ladder. Wauconda’s own tower ladder was positioned directly in front of the building. Overhaul operations on the D side are visible in another shot, while the A-D corner—where the bulk of the fire had been concentrated—is clearly depicted in yet another. A helpful Deerfield team is seen pushing a Viper out of the showroom in one picture, and another shows workers conducting overhaul operations from the Arlington Heights tower ladder. Three of Lake Zurich's four Pierce engines are highlighted in a group shot, while two tower ladders are utilized for further overhaul work. Additionally, a rookie firefighter is being instructed on handling a hand line, and a McLaren—a particularly valuable vehicle at the time of the fire—is shown in another image.
A video documenting the event will be uploaded shortly. For those interested in viewing more visuals, here’s a link to the full gallery.
