Here's what Eric Haak had to share:
The exact time this fire occurred was 1702 hours. By the time I arrived, the flames had already been extinguished. However, I thought it was worth reporting because it was quite an intriguing incident. This two-and-a-half-story wooden building was situated in the middle of the 6900 block of South Winchester Avenue. The block has a cul-de-sac at its southern end. What made this event particularly unusual was that there was a block party taking place right when this fire broke out! Hundreds of people were gathered, grilling food, dancing, and children were running around playing up and down the street. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, this house caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames before any emergency services could arrive. No one on the scene reported noticing anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. One witness simply said that one moment the house seemed perfectly fine, and the next, it was completely ablaze. Engine 101 managed to use their deck gun to control the fire and prevent it from spreading further. I was only about two miles away when Engine 101 radioed in that they were on the scene, but by the time I got there, not much remained to be seen. Engine 129, Truck 50, and Truck 41 were also dispatched as backup units.

I must admit, even though the fire was already under control, the circumstances surrounding it were definitely peculiar. It’s always fascinating to see how quickly things can change in situations like this. As firefighters, we’re trained to handle emergencies, but sometimes, the unpredictability of events leaves us scratching our heads. Anyway, I hope everyone involved is safe, and no injuries were reported. It’s just another reminder of why we need to stay vigilant and prepared at all times.
