Larry Shapiro sent over this report:
The Lake Zurich Fire Department received an emergency call shortly after 5 PM on Monday regarding a fire at Midwest Motors located at 540 Cortland Drive. When the first responding unit arrived, they noticed light smoke seeping from the roof's edges. However, as the situation worsened, the initial response was escalated to a full-scale Box Alarm. The building, which housed a prominent indoor showroom featuring high-end and exotic pre-owned vehicles, quickly became the focus of attention.
The fire initially broke out on the second floor and spread into the attic area at the southern end of the sprinkler-equipped structure. Despite the complexity of the situation, firefighting teams managed to contain the blaze to that specific section of the building. Unfortunately, this resulted in significant water damage throughout the entire complex. While some of the cars sustained damage, the majority were successfully moved out of harm's way before the situation escalated further.
Lake Zurich (with four engines), along with support from Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside, provided engine coverage. Wauconda and Arlington Heights contributed aerial units, while Long Grove and Deerfield supplied squads. Ambulance services were provided by Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove were also on-site to coordinate efforts.
Attached are several photos capturing different aspects of the incident. The first image shows the D side of the fire-damaged building, providing a clear view of the extent of the damage. Another shot highlights the setup of the Arlington Heights Tower 1, demonstrating the scale of the operation. There’s also a picture showing firefighters using a master stream from the tower ladder to extinguish remaining flames, emphasizing the collaborative effort between departments. The fourth photo captures Wauconda’s tower ladder positioned directly in front of the building, showcasing its critical role in the firefighting process.
Further images include an overhead view of the D side during the overhaul phase, highlighting the intense work being done to secure the area. Another captures the A-D corner, which was the epicenter of the fire. One particularly striking photo shows Deerfield firefighters helping to push a Viper out of the showroom, illustrating the quick thinking required under pressure. There’s also an image of firefighters working from the Arlington Heights tower ladder, providing a different perspective on the operation. Additional shots feature Lake Zurich’s fleet of Pierce engines and both tower ladders being utilized for final cleanup and assessment.
An interesting moment captured in one photo shows a Palatine intern receiving instructions on how to handle a hand line, offering insight into the training aspect of such emergencies. Another photo showcases a McLaren, one of the premium sports cars that were inside when the fire broke out.
A video documenting the event will be posted later. For those interested in viewing more visuals, here’s a link to the complete gallery of images. This incident serves as a testament to the dedication and teamwork of local fire departments in managing challenging situations like these.
