Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-21-13

**From Drew Gresik:** I just got back from covering the fire at 2324 South California Avenue. It happened in a two-and-a-half-story wooden building that's currently vacant. The firefighters had already transitioned to a defensive operation by the time I arrived, and some great action shots were captured as they worked on containing it. Tower 5 was moved over to Sector 1, while Squad 1’s Snorkel was busy working alongside a master stream in Sector 2. From what I could tell, the fire seemed to be concentrated in the attic or second floor. I didn't actually see any visible flames—there was just an overwhelming amount of thick, black smoke billowing out. I managed to snap a few pictures before heading out. The intensity of the scene was striking, and the firefighters were clearly working hard under challenging conditions. Here are some of the images I took: --- *Image Caption: [Photo of firefighters operating a ladder truck]* This shows Tower 5 setting up in Sector 1. You can see the effort going into managing the situation. *Image Caption: [Photo showing a Snorkel working with water streams]* Squad 1’s Snorkel is seen here working alongside a master stream in Sector 2. The water jets are cutting through the dense smoke, trying to reach the source of the fire. *Image Caption: [A wide-angle shot of the fire scene]* The building is fully engulfed in smoke, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the flames originated. But you can definitely feel the urgency in the air. *Image Caption: [Close-up of firefighters working on the ground]* Ground units are doing their best to support the aerial efforts. It’s a coordinated effort, and everyone seems focused on bringing this under control. *Image Caption: [Another angle showing multiple streams of water]* Multiple streams of water are being directed toward the structure, attempting to douse the blaze from different angles. *Image Caption: [Firefighters regrouping for strategy]* Here, you can see the firefighters taking a moment to reassess their approach. Collaboration is key when dealing with situations like this. --- Overall, it was a tough scene, but the Chicago Fire Department handled it with professionalism and skill. I’ll keep an eye out for updates on how things progressed after my visit. — Drew Gresik
