At 11 a.m. on the 20th, the sea-going vessel "Wisdom 1," with a total tonnage of 7,800 tons, was slowly pushed out of the Tangjiatun Dongfeng Shipyard Wharf by a tugboat. This marks a significant event, as the ship is currently the largest vessel operating on the Sichuan River.
The "Wisdom 1" is a multi-purpose ship designed for both passenger and cargo transport. Built by Dongfeng Shipyard for a Hong Kong-based shipping company, it measures 116.2 meters in length, 18.2 meters in width, and 10.4 meters in height—roughly equivalent to a 100-meter runway.
According to the shipyard staff, most passenger ships on the Sichuan River have a maximum draft of 2.6 meters. However, after its launch, the "Wisdom 1" was found to have a draft of 3.3 meters when empty. This makes it suitable for both passenger and freight use, earning it the classification of an "infinite navigation class" vessel.
On the day of the launch, the scene was quite impressive. The 50-meter-long tugboat appeared small beside the massive "Wisdom 1." Despite its size, the tugboat was essential in moving the vessel to Jiangsu.
To ensure safe passage, the transport team arranged for crew members to monitor the navigation channel from the bridge of the "Wisdom 1," while maintaining communication with the tugboat crew via radio.
Together, the "Wisdom 1" and the tugboat form the longest fleet ever seen on the Sichuan River, with a combined length of 146 meters. Due to the limitations of the river’s channel, the ship must be towed to Jiangsu before winter's dry season begins. After necessary upgrades, it will then be sent to Hong Kong.
The journey will take around 15 days, with an average speed of 20 kilometers per hour, and only daytime navigation is allowed. This marks a major milestone in river transportation and highlights the growing capabilities of China's inland waterway system.
