Trench rescue in Buffalo Grove, 12-12-22

A Buffalo Grove firefighter and police team was dispatched to 1011 Aspen Drive late Monday afternoon after a worker was reported trapped in a hole in the front yard. Workers had been digging, reportedly to repair a residential sewer line, when a ground collapse occurred, leaving one of them stuck inside. Upon arrival, firefighters found workers urgently trying to dig out their coworker. The entire MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was quickly mobilized, with firefighters from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods beginning the rescue operation. Initial reports indicated that the worker was unconscious and not breathing. Technical rescue specialists arrived from several nearby towns, including Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett, along with the Buffalo Grove Mobile Communications unit. A special request was made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vacuum, but the rescue was completed before the unit could arrive. The victim, who did not survive, was transported from the scene by a Mundelein ambulance. Emergency responders worked tirelessly under difficult conditions to extract the worker from the collapsed trench, highlighting the risks faced by those working in excavation sites. Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the intense effort by first responders and the serious nature of the incident. The community is now mourning the loss of a worker whose life was cut short during what should have been a routine repair job. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers involved in construction and utility work, and the critical importance of safety protocols and rapid emergency response. Local authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the ground collapse.
