China successfully forged the world's first third-generation nuclear power evaporator cone cylinder

China's leading heavy equipment manufacturing company, the country's first heavy machinery group, has made a groundbreaking achievement through research and innovation. It has successfully forged the world's first third-generation nuclear power component—the AP1000 evaporator cone cylinder. This milestone not only fills a domestic gap but also places China at the forefront of global third-generation nuclear power technology development. As a standard for third-generation nuclear power, the Westinghouse AP1000 is known for its enhanced safety and efficiency compared to second-generation systems. It represents one of the most advanced and secure nuclear technologies in the global market. However, producing key components such as the pressure vessel’s integral top cover and the evaporator cone cylinder requires overcoming significant technical challenges due to their complex design and high manufacturing standards. In 2007, China introduced a 15,000-ton hydraulic press, significantly boosting its heavy forging capabilities. That same year, the company signed a contract with South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries to supply an evaporator cone for the AP1000 units No. 1 and No. 2. This collaboration marked the beginning of China's efforts to manufacture third-generation nuclear power components domestically. Alongside technology transfer, China initiated an AP1000 localization strategy, which posed new challenges and motivated engineers to push the boundaries of their expertise. One of the primary challenges was the forging of the cone-shaped cylinder’s straight sections. Traditionally, this involved forging the cylinder into a "horn" shape and then performing extensive machining later on, which was both time-consuming and wasteful. To address this, Chinese engineers developed specialized tools and conducted extensive computer simulations to refine the process and optimize the forging technique. After years of effort and collaboration between experts, engineers, and workers, the world’s first third-generation nuclear power evaporator cone cylinder was finally completed. The remaining 37 forgings for Doosan’s units are currently in production and are expected to be delivered by 2009. This achievement marks a significant step forward in China’s nuclear industry and highlights its growing technological capabilities on the global stage.
