The red and white, towering prilling tower stands as a symbol of urea production facilities. At Fujian Yongan Zhisheng Chemical Co., Ltd., a unique top-hat-style dust-removal tower is installed at the top of their urea prilling tower—something not commonly seen in other domestic urea manufacturers. This innovative upgrade was completed during the company's recent major overhaul and has already shown impressive results. According to the company’s management, after being operational for over a month, the dust recovery rate reached 92%, with an average daily recovery of more than one ton of urea. This improvement alone boosts annual urea production by over 360 tons, generating a direct economic benefit of approximately 600,000 yuan.
The company's transition from ammonium bicarbonate to urea production began in 1996, marking a small-scale chemical fertilizer project during China's "8th Five-Year Plan" period. Initially, the urea prilling tower was designed for a total capacity of 120,000 tons. However, through continuous technological upgrades, the company now produces over 200,000 tons of urea annually. Despite this growth, the original design of the prilling tower—limited in height and space—has caused issues with natural cooling of the molten urea, leading to compaction and quality concerns. To address this, the company introduced cooling fluidized beds and circulating fluidized beds at the bottom of the packaging process and the prilling tower. While these measures helped reduce urea stacking, they also led to environmental problems such as excessive dust emissions.
To tackle this long-standing bottleneck, at the end of April this year, the company took advantage of its annual maintenance period and invested 720,000 yuan to install atomizing nozzles, flushing nozzles, and a circulation pump on top of its 76-meter-high prilling tower. A stainless steel dust cap tower, about 4 meters high and nearly 20 meters in circumference, was also constructed around the top. During operations, the dedusting tower uses urea analytical waste liquid to wash the urea dust, and all the washing liquid is recycled back into the system. This not only solves the issue of recovering both the waste liquid and urea powder but also significantly reduces pollution while improving efficiency.
It is worth noting that there are currently around 120 small urea enterprises across the country. Most of them have similar prilling towers, typically with a diameter of 12 meters and a height of 64 meters. Many companies have expanded their production capacity through technological upgrades without rebuilding the prilling tower itself. Reconstructing a prilling tower that matches current production levels would require 100 days of continuous operation and an investment of about 6 million yuan. In contrast, installing a dust-removal "cap" on top of the existing tower is a much more cost-effective and time-efficient solution. As a result, Zhisheng Company has become the first small urea enterprise in the country to implement such a transformation, setting a new benchmark for innovation and sustainability in the industry.
