The red and white, towering prilling tower stands as a symbol of urea production facilities. At Fujian Yongan Zhisheng Chemical Co., Ltd., the urea prilling tower features a unique top-hat-like dust-removal tower at its summit, a distinctive design not commonly seen in other domestic urea manufacturers. This innovative structure is the result of the company's recent major overhaul. According to the company’s management, after the tower was installed and operated for over a month, the dust recovery rate reached an impressive 92%. On average, more than one ton of urea was recovered daily. This alone translates to an annual increase in urea production of over 360 tons, generating a direct economic benefit of 600,000 yuan.
Zhisheng’s transition from ammonium bicarbonate to urea production began in 1996, marking a small-scale chemical fertilizer project during China’s “8th Five-Year Plan†period. Initially, the urea prilling tower was designed to handle a total capacity of 120,000 tons per year. Over time, through continuous technological upgrades, the company has expanded its annual urea output to over 200,000 tons today. However, the original design of the prilling tower—limited in height and space—has caused challenges in the natural cooling of molten urea, leading to compaction issues and affecting product quality. To address this, the company implemented solutions such as installing cooling fluidized beds and circulating fluidized beds at the bottom of the packaging process and the prilling tower. While these measures helped reduce urea stacking problems, they also led to environmental concerns like excessive urea dust emissions.
To address the long-standing bottleneck in production, at the end of April this year, the company took advantage of its annual maintenance period and invested 720,000 yuan to install atomizing nozzles, flushing nozzles, and circulation pumps on top of the 76-meter-high urea prilling tower. A stainless steel dust cap tower, standing about 4 meters high and with a circumference of nearly 20 meters, was also constructed around the top. During production, the dust removal system uses urea analytical waste liquid to wash the urea dust, and all the washing liquid is recycled back into the system. This not only solves the issue of recovering urea analytical waste liquid and urea powder but also significantly reduces pollution while improving efficiency.
It is reported that there are currently around 120 small urea enterprises across the country. Most of them operate prilling towers with a diameter of 12 meters and a height of 64 meters. Many companies have increased their production capacity through continuous technological improvements without rebuilding the prilling tower itself. Reconstructing a prilling tower that matches current production levels requires a full 100-day shutdown and an investment of approximately 6 million yuan. In contrast, installing a dust-removal “cap†on top of the prilling tower is a more cost-effective and time-saving solution. As a result, Zhisheng Company has become the first small urea enterprise to implement such a transformation successfully.
