Li Dakai, chairman and general manager of Shaanxi Fast Automotive Transmission Co., Ltd., shared his insights during a recent interview with reporters. He highlighted that the Chinese automotive industry has a history spanning over 50 years since the 1950s. However, he emphasized that real growth and development truly began after China's reform and opening-up policies. More specifically, the past decade has seen remarkable progress across various sectors, including commercial vehicles, buses, passenger cars, special vehicles, and automotive components.
In 2007, China's auto production reached an impressive 8.88 million units, securing the third position globally. This milestone marked China's emergence as a major player in automobile manufacturing. Despite this success, Li pointed out that while China is a large automotive producer, it is not yet a leading or powerful one. He noted that most of the popular brands dominating the domestic market are foreign, and genuine Chinese brands have yet to take the lead.
He acknowledged that there is still a noticeable gap between China’s auto industry and global leaders in terms of technology, brand strength, and innovation. The path to becoming a true powerhouse in the automotive sector is long and challenging. To achieve this, China must not only adopt advanced technologies from abroad but also prioritize independent innovation.
Li expressed optimism about the future, noting that many Chinese entrepreneurs and companies are now boldly competing with international brands through innovation and strong R&D efforts. These enterprises, which he refers to as the "backbone" of the industry, represent the driving force behind China's automotive development. Some foreign analysts even predict that within the next 10 to 20 years, China could become the world's strongest automotive industry. Li shares this belief, confident that with determination and vision, the Chinese people will realize this goal sooner rather than later.
