The 7K90MC-C6 diesel engine, developed by Shanghai Zhongchuan Sanjing Shipbuilding Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., has officially entered trial production at the China Shipbuilding Mitsui Diesel Engine Manufacturing Base in the Heavy Equipment Industrial Zone of Shanghai Lingang New City. This marks a significant milestone for CSSC Mitsui Co., Ltd., as it represents the company’s first domestically produced diesel engine, signaling its growing capability to meet the demands of China's marine industry.
The 7K90MC-C6 is specifically designed for a 3500TEU container ship being built for Shanghai Shipyard Ship Co., Ltd. It is expected to be assembled in August, delivered in early September, and handed over by mid-October. By the end of the year, CSSC Mitsui plans to deliver three engines, totaling 100,000 horsepower. Currently, the company is fully booked with orders, and its production schedule is already set through 2010.
CSSC Mitsui Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), Mitsui Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. It specializes in producing high-power, low-speed marine diesel engines with cylinder bore sizes of 600 mm or larger. The company is also capable of manufacturing the world’s largest 14K108ME-C diesel engine, which can power 12,000TEU container ships.
With a registered capital of 480 million yuan, the company is being developed in two phases, with a total investment exceeding 2 billion yuan. The first phase is scheduled to complete civil construction and equipment installation this year, aiming to achieve an annual production capacity of 1.7 million horsepower. Once completed, it will become the largest manufacturer of marine high-power diesel engines in China. The second phase will boost the annual production capacity to 3 million horsepower, solidifying the company’s role as a key player in China’s marine engine industry.
As of June, all main infrastructure projects at CSSC Mitsui Co., Ltd. have been completed, including pre-installed workshops, large-scale workshops, assembly areas, auxiliary machine rooms, and the assembly center. The site is now undergoing final rectification and is nearly ready for full operation. The research building is 68% complete, while the production support area is about 90% finished. This progress highlights the company’s strong commitment to becoming a leading force in the global marine diesel engine market.
