On July 10th, the 7K90MC-C6 diesel engine, developed by Shanghai Zhongchuan Sanjing Shipbuilding Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., officially entered trial production at the China Shipbuilding Mitsui Diesel Engine Manufacturing Base in the Heavy Equipment Industrial Zone of Shanghai Lingang New City. This marks a significant milestone for CSSC Mitsui Co., Ltd., as it represents their first domestically produced diesel engine, signaling the company's growing capacity to meet the demands of the marine industry.
The 7K90MC-C6 is specifically designed for a 3500TEU container ship being built for Shanghai Shipyard Ship Co., Ltd. The vessel is expected to be assembled in August, submitted for inspection in early September, and delivered by mid-October. By the end of this year, CSSC Mitsui aims to deliver three such engines, totaling 100,000 horsepower. Currently, the company is fully booked with orders, and its production schedule is already set through 2010.
CSSC Mitsui Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), Mitsui Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. It has the capability to produce high-power low-speed marine diesel engines with cylinder diameters of 600 mm or larger. The company is also capable of manufacturing the world’s largest 14K108ME-C-type diesel engine, which can power ultra-large container ships of up to 12,000 TEU.
With a registered capital of 480 million yuan, the company plans to develop in two phases, with a total investment exceeding 2 billion yuan. The first phase is expected to complete civil construction and equipment installation by the end of this year. Once completed, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 1.7 million horsepower, making it the largest manufacturer of high-power marine diesel engines in China. After the second phase, the annual output is expected to reach 3 million horsepower, solidifying its role as a key player in China’s marine engine industry.
As of June, all major infrastructure projects at CSSC Mitsui, including pre-installed workshops, large-scale production halls, assembly areas, and auxiliary rooms, have been completed. The site is currently undergoing final adjustments to meet acceptance standards. The research building is 68% complete, while the production support area is about 90% finished. This progress highlights the company’s strong commitment to delivering advanced marine propulsion solutions.
