On July 16, a breakthrough in ammonia synthesis catalyst technology was announced at a conference held in Dalian. A new ferrous-based catalyst, jointly developed by Zhejiang University of Technology and Liaoning Panjin Southern Chemical Liaohe Catalyst Co., Ltd., has successfully overcome the limitations of the traditional iron sulfate system, which has been in use for over 80 years. This innovation marks a major achievement with full independent intellectual property rights. The successful deployment of this new catalyst in 39 companies worldwide highlights its significant potential in driving energy efficiency and reducing emissions in the ammonia industry.
According to data from companies using the Amomax-10H pre-reduction catalyst, the implementation of just 130 tons of the product can save 5 tons of turbine steam per hour and cut reduction time by 3 to 4 days. This translates into cost savings of approximately 5 million yuan, with no ammonia discharge during the entire process and an increase in ammonia production by over 100 tons, boosting revenue by around 9 million yuan. When used in combination with the Amomax-10H oxidation catalyst, 200 tons of the product can increase daily ammonia output by 11.9%, leading to an annual production increase of 39,000 tons of synthetic ammonia and 63,000 tons of urea.
The new catalyst has already been adopted in 11 countries, including Germany, the U.S., Russia, and Japan, as well as in major installations across China. By 2006, it had gained 30 users, and the number has since grown to 39. Industry experts predict that by 2010, more than 80% of large-scale ammonia plants in China will switch to this advanced catalyst.
China’s synthetic ammonia industry is largely composed of small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which suffer from high energy consumption and costs. In 2005, the sector consumed about 79 million tons of standard coal, accounting for 25.9% of the total energy use in the petrochemical industry. If this new catalyst is widely adopted, it could significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Tan Zhuzhou, former president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, praised the catalyst as a game-changer. He emphasized the importance of government and industry support for energy-saving and emission-reduction initiatives, encouraging the adoption of innovative technologies to boost production while lowering energy use.
