A wrecked truck, positioned along a Columbus County (NC) highway, has become a powerful visual reminder for drivers. The damaged vehicle is not just any car—it’s a fire department truck that was destroyed in a tragic crash and now stands as a warning symbol. A large sign beside it, written in all caps, reads: “THE RESULTS OF NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO EMERGENCY LIGHTS & VEHICLES ON A TRAFFIC SCENE.â€
The display was created by Steve Camlin, chief of Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue, who hopes the shocking sight will encourage drivers to pay attention and yield to emergency vehicles. “The message is: Put down your phones, pay attention to what’s going on, give us your undivided attention, so that way we can remain safe,†he said.
The accident occurred on December 10, 2018, when a tractor-trailer crashed into the fire department’s vehicle and then struck a family’s car while they were receiving assistance. The wreckage has been left in place as a permanent reminder of the dangers of distracted driving.
Fire officials say the truck and sign will stay on the roadside for the next one to two weeks before being removed by a salvage company. For many drivers, this stark display serves as a sobering reminder that safety on the road depends on awareness, respect, and quick action—especially when emergency responders are at work.
