A shocking sight on a Columbus County (NC) highway has been capturing the attention of drivers across the region. A wrecked fire department truck, positioned alongside a bold sign, is serving as a powerful reminder about the importance of paying attention to emergency vehicles. The display was created by local firefighters with a clear message: awareness can save lives.

"We want people to put their phones down and pay attention to what's happening around them," said Steve Camlin, chief of Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue. "If we can get even one person to be more alert, it’s worth it." The truck, once used in emergency response, was severely damaged in an accident and now stands as a symbol of the dangers of distracted driving.

The incident occurred on December 10, 2018, when a tractor-trailer struck the fire department vehicle and then crashed into a family's car that was being helped at the scene. The crash left a lasting impact on the community and inspired the fire department to create this visual warning to prevent future tragedies.

The sign, written in all caps, reads: “THE RESULTS OF NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO EMERGENCY LIGHTS & VEHICLES ON A TRAFFIC SCENE.” It serves as a direct message to drivers who may not realize the consequences of ignoring emergency vehicles on the road.

Fire officials say the wreckage will remain in place for the next one to two weeks while the salvage company prepares to remove it. But the message it conveys is meant to stay with drivers long after the truck is gone. In a world where distractions are everywhere, this display is a sobering reminder of what happens when we fail to pay attention.

Tongue And Groove Face Flanges

The Tongue and Groove faces of this flanges must be matched. One flange face has a raised ring (Tongue) machined onto the flange face while the mating flange has a matching depression (Groove) machined into it's face.

Tongue-and-groove facings are standardized in both large and small types. They differ from male-and-female in that the inside diameters of the tongue-and-groove do not extend into the flange base, thus retaining the gasket on its inner and outer diameter. General flange faces such as the RTJ, TandG and the FandM shall never be bolted together. The reason for this is that the contact surfaces do not match and there is no gasket that has one type on one side and another type on the other side.
