Ships in Yantai Sea are expected to be “seamlessly” monitored

A new initiative has been announced by the Yantai Maritime Department, revealing that the Ministry of Communications will invest 39.5 million yuan to upgrade and expand six radar stations and establish a ship traffic management center in the Yantai Sea area of the Huanghua Sea. This project aims to achieve seamless ship monitoring and significantly enhance both the surveillance capabilities and emergency response levels in the region. According to the latest reports, as part of the Ministry of Communications' requirements, the Yantai Maritime Department is planning to construct four new radar stations on Beishan Island, Dazhushan Island, Laobei Mountain, and Lumjiao in the Changshan Islands, as well as in Penglai and Longkou. Additionally, the North Changshan Radar Station will be renovated, and the newly built Zhizhidao Radar Station will also be integrated into the system. A centralized ship traffic management center will be established, forming a comprehensive network of six radar stations and one central monitoring hub. This advanced system is designed as an integrated platform that combines information sharing and remote data transmission. It will provide full coverage for key shipping routes such as Yantai to Dalian, Penglai to Lushun, Penglai to Long Island, and critical waterways like Laotieshan, Changshan, Dengzhou, and Yantai. All vessels operating within the jurisdiction will benefit from continuous and detailed monitoring, which is expected to reduce incidents such as ship collisions, grounding, and unauthorized entry into restricted areas. Moreover, the radar display will allow maritime authorities to visually track all vessel movements in real time. In the event of an emergency, the department can quickly mobilize ships and nearby rescue forces to respond promptly, greatly improving the speed and effectiveness of emergency operations. This project is a crucial component of the National Water Transportation Safety Supervision and Rescue System Layout Plan. The Yantai Maritime Safety Administration covers an area of approximately 21,000 square kilometers, encompassing over 70 islands. Along its 910-kilometer coastline, there are 10 major ports, with nearly 200,000 commercial vessels passing through annually. The region is known for its rich navigational resources, complex sea conditions, high vessel density, and unpredictable weather—making it a key focus area under the "Four Districts and One Line" strategy identified by the Ministry of Communications.
